Cheap International Calls

Speaking of traveling, this article was very interesting on calling internationally for cheap.

We use SkypeIn and SkypeOut and have been very pleased with the service. With SkypeIn, we get a US phone number that rings our computer. This is mainly so the grandparents and great-grandparents can call us without needing any technical assistance. It is also really great because we can leave a US number with our US contacts like credit cards that we still have.

We do close down our computer at night though so that people who forget about the time change, don't wake us up!

I didn't know about the others he mentioned though but if you have used them successfully (or any other service), please let us know in the comments below!

We use "Magic Jack". It connects to your computer and you can get a U.S. phone number that people can call. It is Voice over IP and works pretty well.

Are you familiar the German call-by-call connection procedure? With a T-Home landline you can dial a net access number to make one specific call via a competitor.
So a regular call to the US (maybe to 001-12345) costs 12,6 cent/min with T-Home. If you add for example 01077 in front of the number (01077-001-12345) you make your call via Callax for 1,2 cent/min. But these prices can change so check for the cheapest pre-prefixes for the moment :)

Imho an oldschool landline phone is much more comfortable than a PC with headset.
