Travel insurance for travel back to the US

Yelli and I are going back to the US for Xmas for 2 weeks. We've recently been added to the public insurance rolls here in Germany. Unfortunately, that insurance will not cover us while we're in the US. Presumably we'll need travel insurance, which our public insurance provider offers and is sending in the mail. But maybe an American insurance company is a better way to go?

Another sticking point is that we may need coverage for a pre-existing condition. Hmmm...

Does anyone have experience in dealing with this? Any advice? Please leave any helpful info in comments or if you prefer you can email the address in the profile for yelli.

I use Inter for my private insurance when outside the EU/Germany -- I asked specifically and they do cover (at least in the policy I have) US citizens in the USA.

We got that extra insurance for US travel. They gave us a little brochure to carry around while traveling. What's crazy is that it is in German!! No one is going to be able to read it!

We roll with SDK. See http://www.sdk.de/dcps.php?id=84 for details. It was recommended to us by a half-local couple we know (she carries a U.S. passport, he carries a a German one - but neither of them are ethnically German). This came up pretty recently over at Cheeburgers & Sauerkraut:

The ADAC auto club sells health insurance for travellers as well, even to non-members. Haven't bought it myself, though, so I can't recommend one way or the other.

We've submitted US bills to our German private insurance 3 or 4 times without any problems.

I've use the ADAC service PapaScott mentioned before and can recommend it. Recently we've been using the travel insurance from R + V Versicherung offered by our local Volksbank where we have our accounts. I don't know if you have to be a bank customer to use it, though.

my mom and brother have used
Travel Guard a few times. They've only used it from US, but it has a Germany to US plan as well. It has worked for them. It covers lost bags and travel delays too.
